By Crom!

Say, here's another commission. This time it's Robert E. Howard's Bêlit and Conan. I'll admit I know very little about Conan, who I've never drawn before. Most of what I do know about him is what I could learn from my kid brother who was obsessed the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. So basically a lot of screaming "CROM!"

I am, however, a big fan of John Buscema and it's tough not to be at least vaguely aware of his Conan work. Some of the creatures I've drawn here come loosely from his covers for Marvel's Conan series, some of them I just made up, and some are just a giant snake. I've drawn Bêlit once for the Comic Twart so it was fun to return to her. Overall this was a blast to draw so I'd be more than happy to do something more in this world.

And while I'm at it, good buddy and fellow Comic Twartist Mike Hawthorne is penciling a Conan book coming from Dark Horse in December, written by none other than Roy Thomas! I am positive it is going to look great, especially now that I see it's also being inked by John Lucas. Look here to find out more about that and be sure to pick it up.

Finally, CROOOOMMMM!

Awesome!

Robert E Howard's CONAN is a much better character than that movie...or the one coming up.

Read the original stories!

So, basically, nothing. :P

Conan the Barbarian was a good (if flawed) film, but Robert E. Howard's original creation was something else entirely. Thomas' run on the comics often directly adapted Howard's original stories, even down to the dialogue and prose. They had to contend with the CCA at the time (hence how comics Belit had a fur bikini instead of being... well, topless, as in the original story) but they did a pretty good job nonetheless.

Anyway, that's a very nice picture. Reminds me a little of Mignola and Darrow.

That's a Smashing commission, Doc! Wow..I haven't read any Conan since my early D&D days back in the early 80's, but I do recall them being a great read. Hmm. As I do work in a Library, perhaps I could scrounge up one for some lunchtime reading...
