So Long, 2011!

2011, I hardly knew ye. This year went by blindingly quick but it was memorable none the less. 2011 saw the announcement of my upcoming work with Nate Cosby, Buddy Cops, set to hit the shelves in February with Dark Horse Presents #9. Just a few weeks ago the Jim Henson's The Storyteller anthology from Archaia was released, which included a story written by Paul Tobin and drawn by myself. And of course, at the end of July my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our daughter! The last five months have certainly flown by.

Above is a compilation of some of my favorites from the last year. I appreciate all of you who keep coming back and leaving such kind words. I look forward to sharing more with you in the year to come. Happy New Year!

Flash and Substance

I thought I’d try my hand at Flash’s new duds. I only have that much more respect for Francis Manapul now because figuring out all those seams is quite the undertaking.

Say, Jim!

I thought I’d try my hand at Superman’s new outfit. This isn’t a slam on the new design at all, but it took me a good while to figure out how exactly all that piping works, and I only got as far down as the belt. Even then I’m not sure I got it all. Either way, I’m not used to working like this so it was a nice stretch.

Statler & Waldorf

That joke is so old, it makes you look young!

Family Portrait

Another recent commission. The request was for either Dream or Death, but the buyer had been waiting a while so I threw in both. To the best of my memory I've only drawn each of them once, and they were both years ago. It's a shame because there are a lot of interesting things about drawing the both of them.

What If?

Pencils for a recent commission, based on the cover to Fantastic Four #190, in which I was basically asked to draw a bunch of my favorite characters. And Darkseid.

Okay, but how about now?

New design/stuff for sale

If you take a second to look around the blog you'll notice that I've changed up a number of things over the last week. At the top under the banner is a row of buttons that will take you to a number of different things, including my tumblr, deviantArt, and store. Speaking of which, I've just uploaded a number of more recent pieces to the store and encourage you to go take a look. I'm hoping to keep scanning and putting up more pieces over the next couple of days, but if there's something you're interested in and don't see feel free to ask me about it. Thanks everybody!

More Docs

I drew up some more of these for fun over the last couple of weeks. Admittedly, the more I went into comic book territory the less it really looks like me. The Kubert one became more of a study of his work than anything resembling me. Finally there's this one inspired by Mike Holmes, who got me doing these in the first place.

This week's theme at the Comic Twart, picked by Mitch Gerads, was Bruce Wayne's boy Damian. Mitch once told me this is all the kid says and ever since every time I draw him I've got him saying "tt."

Marvel Two-In-One!

After the DC Fifty-Too! group's success with remaking the DC Universe it turned it's focus on the Marvel Universe. Above is my entry for one of my favorite series in Marvel's history, Marvel Two-In-One. I say more about my affection for the series, Ben Grimm, Gorilla-Man, and which characters I'd pick in following issues over at the site.

Here's the thumbnail from when I was trying to figure out who exactly I was going team Ben with. The actual size on this is about an inch and a half high. I originally just started drawing a crowd around them, "Doombots in the Savage Land" came later. I knew from the start that GM would use one of Ben's classic lines.Once I decided that it would be Gorilla-Man, I did some sketches of both of them to remind myself how to draw them, and play around with some specific design aspects, mostly small costume details. Thanks for looking!

Serve and Protect?

I started drawing the characters from Buddy Cops last night for fun and this is what I ended up with. I had intended to do this as a rough and then draw everything traditionally but I put so much time into it digitally that I just stuck with it. Still no word on when the first story will show up in Dark Horse Presents, but I'll be sure to make it known when I find out.

Portrait of a Doc

The other night, inspired by the great Mike Holmes, I sketched some self-portraits in different styles. In case you can't read it, from top to bottom is me in the styles of Hergé, E.C. Segar, Charles Schulz, and C.C. Beck. It's a fun little exercise.

A recent commission of Mon-El and Shadow Lass, two members of the Legion of Superheroes, a group I'm largely unfamiliar with but would like to know more about.

O Captain, Future Captain

As we get back into our regular rotation, the theme at ye olde Comic Twart this past week was Bucky Barnes, as picked by Mitch Breitweiser. Instead of the usual preview clip, I've posted the whole thing here. I've certainly come around to this character since Brubaker and Epting brought him back as the Winter Soldier a few years ago and his recent resurgence as a mainstay.

The background image is a Jack Kirby Captain America page I found, cleaned up, and colored. I've posted that below. I should note that this is not at all how I would normally color it, this was done completely with design in mind and trying to emphasize Bucky.
Thanks for looking!

Holy Flying Grayson!

Recent commission of the original Robin, Dick Grayson.

The Power of SHAZAM!

The Comic Twart has returned! Like our Marvel What-If? theme, a bunch of us chose a DC book and ran wild. Of course, I went with The Power of Shazam!, treating it like a follow-up to my mock cover for DC Fifty-Too! You can read more at the Twart, and make sure to check out the rest of the guys' great work.

I've been posting clips here and there as I working on it, but below you can see some of the process for this one. Here are the pencils:

The inks:
This is the button in the upper right corner featuring Mary Marvel:
And here's the one featuring Freddy that I ended up not going with:Both of which include references to Mystery Science Theater 3000.

As always, thanks for looking!
