DC Women

I did a quick interview with DC Women Kicking Ass, drew this quick Black Canary for it. You can read the interview here.

A little plastic

A week after I picked him for the Twart, it looks like I may finally have a chance to work something up for Plastic Man. Here’s today’s warm-up with that in mind. This is probably the most restrained I've ever drawn the guy.

Apologies to the work of Alphonse Mucha. I don't think I've ever really mentioned it here but I'm a big fan of the Fables series, particularly the character Flycatcher. I've been looking for an excuse to draw him for a while now.

Wanted to make sure I posted something this week, running around trying to make sure I'm prepared for ECCC. I realized a while ago that nearly every time I post something here I go on about how much I like the character, so I thought it might be a good change if I drew somebody I don't like today. So here's the Punisher. I don't hate the guy, I don't really hate any characters (because clearly that'd be silly), but man it takes a lot for me to read anything with him.

SALE going on

If you head over to the sorely under-updated Doc Shop you'll see I'm running a sale for the moment-- half-off on everything. Everything that's over there at the moment anyway. I'm sitting in piles of old mugshot sets and pinups, even a few pieces I did for the Comic Twart, and I need to get them out of here. They're cluttering up the office. So go give it a look. I'm doing my best to update when things have sold.

Working on commissions today, here's one of the Hulk.

I’m on a Flash kick again. I love drawing this kid but haven’t since the days of Flash Fridays. The Impulse design is great, and this is on top of an entire family of superheroes with great designs.

The World's Strangest COMIC TWART

The theme at the Comic Twart this past week was DC's Doom Patrol, as picked by Chris Samnee. Instead of showing a clip here this week I thought I'd show a couple of photos I took in the middle of inking everything. Above is some of the lettering I did for this week's piece, and below is some detail of Negative Man. Click on Negative Man to see the whole piece finished and in color.

Jay Garrick commission. Nobody ever asks me for the Flash, any of them. If I had my way it’d happen more often.

This guy looks familiar. Recent commission of Ted “Wildcat” Grant.

Here's a Gorilla Grodd sketch from last night that I threw some colors on. OR it's just a regular gorilla with sideburns and Daredevil is standing behind him.

Unlike when I did this for Mary and Freddy I have nothing to say about Billy's current place in the books. In fact, the reason I drew it was mostly so I could do this:

Kahndaq vs. Atlantis

Imperious Rex! Here's a long-overdue commission of Black Adam taking on Namor along with their respective cohorts. This was one of my favorite ideas of the last couple of rounds. I'm always game for drawing Black Adam, and I've never tried Isis or Osiris. I sort of made up elements of Osiris' costume since, looking over 52, nobody drew it the same way twice.

Namor and Namora I've drawn a couple times, both are a lot of fun, but Namorita's almost completely new to me. I still don't quite understand her relation to the others.

You all can probably guess who I'd think would win.

On Robin and Superman

I’m looking at doing these kinds of sketches at conventions so I did a couple more to make sure this would work for characters who aren’t Batman. I got a couple great suggestions the other night and ran with them.

I talked a lot the other day about how much I liked Batman and Spider-Man as a kid compared to today. Conversely, Superman has been and always will be awesome.

The only thing I can say about Robin is that when we were kids I always made my brother be Robin while I played Batman. Being older has it’s privileges.

Commissions- Feb. and ECCC

Commissions! I know it's been a while. I took on a lot of them in that last round in an effort to make up for missed time, probably too many. I'm finishing up the last of them this week and planning to send them out soon after. What that means is it's time to open them again. Below you'll find the rates. You'll notice I've raised the rates on figure commissions slightly, hopefully this doesn't scare anybody off.Also- I don't know that I've talked much about it but I will be at Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, March 4-6. Along with this month's regular round of commissions I'll be taking pre-show commissions that (if you're going, obviously) you can pick up from me at the show, just let me know when you e-mail me. The same rates apply. These pre-show commissions help us afford to actually get to the show so if you're going and you're interested in getting something from me anyway, please consider buying something ahead of time. I'm not sure yet what prints and such I'll take (though I've got a few ideas) but I will also have most of my originals available for sale.

Like I said, I won't be taking as many regular commissions this round, so make sure to shoot me an e-mail soon if you're interested. I will be taking on as many ECCC commissions as possible to cover the costs of going though. Hope to see you there!

UPDATE! I've hit my limit for regular commissions for the month, thanks to all who've written in! I'm still taking requests for ECCC pick-ups though if you're interested!

On Spider-Man and Batman

I posted the black and white versions of these roughs on my Tumblr earlier today, two sketches I did last night as a cool down from the day.

I've been thinking about these two a lot lately. I get asked occasionally why I don't draw more of Spider-Man or Batman, given that they're arguably the two most popular superheroes in modern comics. The truth is I just don't enjoy them as much as I did when I was 10. That isn't to say I don't like them, but it's nowhere near as much as I did in '95. When I was a kid these were THE GUYS to me. Them and the Ninja Turtles. It probably helped that they both had popular Saturday morning cartoons at the time. And it's not that I think they've gotten worse since then either, only that my tastes have understandably changed since then.

So, no, I don't draw them terribly often for my own purposes but I do still enjoy the characters. They come up as requests in commissions often enough to where I can get my fix and move on to all the characters I'm goofballs about. After all, I still get chills when I hear the intro for the 90's Batman Animated Series.

Power Man & Iron Fist

Here's another sketch I did for the folks at Cornered, one of my favorite duos, Power Man and Iron Fist.
