Get Up With It

I haven't talked about Miles Davis in a while. I love Miles Davis.

Just trying to wrap my head around the theme at the Comic Twart this week. It's been a while since I drew Frank here.

And just a reminder-- new items at the shop.

Updates at the Shop

The "Moon" Shaner Needs Diapers drive has started with the addition of a lot of work from the last year now up at the Doc Shop. There you'll find daily sketches, pieces from the Comic Twart, and a few random pages. Give it a look if you get the chance, thanks!

I just finished the pencils on an upcoming project and I'm moving into inks, so it felt like it was about time for another Motivational Aquaman. I figure Aquaman shouting "Comics!" at me all day would do the trick.

Eeyow! It's the COMIC TWART

Almost a month ago I picked Plastic Man for my choice of the week at the COMIC TWART, but I was only able to devote about 15-20 minutes per day to it due to ECCC and other work. I finally finished it today, so while I've got a detail shot of a piece of it above, you can check out the whole thing here.

I love this character, and I'm a huge fan of his creator Jack Cole. I'd love a chance at getting to do work with Plastic Man at some point.

Inking Ramona

Metamorpho and company. Ramona Fradon’s pencils and my inks. This is the first time I’ve tried inking somebody else. I can see all the bumps and warts I made but overall this was a fun learning experience. Might try to color it if I get the chance but I probably won’t. Thanks to Brent Schoonover for finding the pencils.

Another marker sketch on an envelope, of Irredeemable's The Plutonian.

Like a Hood Ornament

A recent commission of the Rocketeer and Betty. If you haven't picked up that (relatively) recent repackaging of Dave Stevens' original Rocketeer comics from IDW you are doing yourself a disservice.

Muppet Doc

Today’s loosen-up sketch, me as a Muppet. I penciled this and initially gave up because it looked so much like my Dad at first, but I decided to finish it up because it went so quickly. But now I realize that me as a muppet is just a mash-up of the Swedish Chef, Bert, and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. This is unsettling.

The Other Captain

Captain America sketch, done in markers on an envelope. I don't do these terribly often anymore, but I enjoy drawing on the yellow surface. May have to get some colored paper for the next show I do.

Hey folks! I'm back from Seattle and Carla and I had a great time. It was a really fun and productive weekend and if I can help it I'll be back from here on out. I did a lot of these small 6x6 drawings for warm-ups in the morning, above is a Luke Cage I did to loosen up that didn't sell. I considered putting in a word ballon that said "Where's my money, Honey?" but decided against it.

I spent most of the weekend hanging out with buddies Mitch Gerads, Kyle Latino, and Scott Dillon. I got a chance to meet a lot of great folks I've only been talking with online for years now, in no particular order: Jason Horn, Robert Wilson, Dean Trippe, Chris Roberson and his wife Allison, Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko, Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover (check out the great Mary Marvel I got from Colleen), Joe Quinones and Maris Wicks, Eric Canete, Bryce Carlson, John Schork, Joe Keatinge, Jon McNally, Jeff Lemire, Derek Fridolfs, Mike Mitchell, Chris Haley, Curt Franklin, Eugene Ahn, Ryan Cody, Calamity Jon Morris, Nathan Fairbairn, Andy Kuhn, Tom Fowler, Josh Williamson, Brett Williams, Guy Davis, and probably a whole bunch more I'm going to be embarrassed that I didn't mention here. Seeing friends like the Samnees and Peter Krause again was a blast. Not to mention all of you great folks who came out to say hello and a whole lot of other nice things, you absolutely made our weekend.

And a quick thanks to those of you who came to the Comic Twart panel on Friday night. I tried to stay out of the way of the rest of the guys (because they're much funnier) but it was really a lot of fun. We all drew Conan and had a really good laugh and it was nice to see people there to see us.

I got so much cool stuff over the weekend that I don't want to muck up things here with it, but I've posted some of it over on my tumblr.

Thanks Seattle! Now back to work.

As I've been mentioning for the last couple of weeks, I'll be in Seattle this weekend for Emerald City Comicon. It's a Friday through Sunday show, and you can find out more at the show's website.

I'll be at table C-08 with Carla, between Dean Trippe and Gabriel Hardman. I'll have prints of the Twart pieces for Superman, Captain Marvel, and Popeye, as well as most of my originals. I'll also be doing sketches for those interested. If you're one of the folks who pre-ordered something just stop by and I'll have it for you.

There will also be a COMIC TWART panel on Friday night at 7 pm in Room 4C3-4, the first panel I've taken part in. We'll be talking a little bit, drawing a little bit, and at some point Mitch Gerads will probably cry. We'd love to see you all there.

In general, I'm really looking forward to the show and meeting some of you! See you on the other side.

Here's the last post before I leave for ECCC (more about that coming up soon), one of the pre-show commissions of Mr. J's right-hand lady, Harley Quinn. She's been requested at shows before and I've never been happy with how she turned out for one reason or another, but I was glad to really take some time and figure her out with this. She's a lot of fun.
