Weirdos from another COMIC TWART

A couple weeks after the theme was picked I'm finally posting my Calvin & Hobbes for the Comic Twart. You can see the full piece here. This was actually a commission that the buyer had been waiting very patiently for, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone. I'll admit that after spending the first decade of my life obsessed with these characters I was a little intimidated by the idea of trying to come up with something for these two. Anyway, I got all weepy about it over at the Twart, so you can read that over there if you like. I threw a bunch of references to the things I liked about the strip in there, even the black space is a reference to one of my favorite Sunday strips.

Quick note: I didn't have a daily sketch yesterday because I'd unwittingly run out of ink the day before. Those will be back though. In the meantime, check out the shop, where I'm still running the 25% off Sale.

Bats and Ivy

Here's today's sketch, Batman with a silhouette appearance from one of my favorite Gotham City villains, Poison Ivy. I personally like drawing Ivy a little differently but the longer hair makes for a more distinct silhouette, I hope. Batman changes a little nearly every time I draw him too, I keep trying to edge him toward some combination of Jordi Bernet and Frank Robbins, both of which have drawn my favorite takes on Batman.

The Bottle City

Today's warm-up, Superman and the Bottle City of Kandor. The idea of a miniaturized city in a bottle is another in a long list of things I love about silver age Superman stories, and it had been a little while since I'd drawn the big blue boy scout.

Again, like the Jonah Hex sketch, this is for sale if you're interested, $60 US. I will be taking commissions again soon but when I do the rates will be raised significantly. The 25% off Sale at the Doc Shop is still going on as well.

Mark of the Demon

Here's today's warm-up of one of my favorite characters, DC Comics' Jonah Hex. I say it nearly every time I draw the guy but I'd really like to tackle an issue of Jonah Hex at some point.

New Mutant

Today's commission, Dani Moonstar. Dani's one of those characters I would see occasionally and think that at some point I'd really to try drawing but just never seem to get around to. Thanks for giving me a good excuse to do so, Brett!

Also, I'm doing another sale at the Doc Shop, make sure to go give it a look!

Batgirl and Robin

Today’s commission/inking warmup, Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) and Robin (Damian Wayne). I don’t think I’ve ever drawn any of the Batgirls, but this was fun. I for one really dig both of these costumes and enjoy what little I know of the characters themselves. And yes, I am going to have Damian saying “-TT.” every time I draw him.

Of Sight and Sound

I've been watching the Twilight Zone on Netflix while I work, so here's today's warm-up of Rod Serling.

Am I Right or am I TWART?

Last week at the Comic Twart was Roald Dahl week, as picked by Tom Fowler. If you haven't already figured out which book I chose to draw from, head over to the Twart to see the full piece.

This was an awful lot of fun. Sometimes I need to be reminded that there are plenty of things I love drawing in addition to superheroes, monsters, gorillas, etc. I always loved the illustrations in Dahl's books when I was a kid, not to mention the books themselves. Make sure you check out the rest of the Dahl-inspired pieces from last week at the Twart, there are some real beauties.

The fearsome and horrible MANGOG! Today's warmup.

Gorilla in the Mist

I miss Agents of Atlas, particularly this guy, and hope they do come back eventually. Until then I'm just going to keep drawing Ken Hale from time to time.

No. 1

I got to thinking about how much I'd rather see Bizarro in a Superman movie after it was announced that General Zod had been cast for Man of Steel. Bizarro is my favorite Superman "villain", heck, he's probably my favorite Superman character. If not in Man of Steel, I hope they get around to putting Bizarro in a movie eventually.

I drew this as a bit of a companion to a recent Superman sketch. Square explosions are harder to draw than I expected.

UPDATE: I put 'em side by side for the heck of it.

The Ginchiest COMIC TWART

Here are my inks for the last Comic Twart theme, Mike Allred's MADMAN, as picked by Steve Bryant. You can go see the full piece over at the Twart itself.

John Coltrane, because he’s another favorite. I spent the majority of college just sitting around listening to Miles and Coltrane.
