Checking In

I think it’s important, now and then, to take stock of what you’re up to from another perspective.

Mistress of Magic

Zatanna Zatara, a long overdue commission. I realized a little while ago that I spend so much time drawing with the color in mind that my B/W pieces tend to come off like coloring book pages. With that in mind I went at this one trying to let it stand on its own a little, but in the end still added just a little gray and the paper texture. A lot of this is me foolishly trying to be Alex Raymond.

Batsman

Today's sketch is Batsman, from Chris Roberson's run on Superman/Batman, based on a design by Dean Trippe.

Billy's New Threads

Since we got a better look at Shazam's (the new DC Universe's Captain Marvel) costume yesterday I figured I should give it a try to say that I did. It took a good while longer to do than I expected-- I guess I got so used to drawing the guy one way that anything else took me a while to wrap my head around. There's still some details that I'm not sure whether I got right or not. Either way, it was definitely interesting to tackle a design so different from my own wheelhouse.

I still can't draw the guy not smiling though.

All-Star Western

All three of those Western sketches from the past week, smashed together.

Weird Western Tales

DC Comics' Scalphunter is today's wake-up sketch. This is the last DC Western one I'm doing for the time being, and I figured it was either going to be him or El Diablo, and frankly I just like Scalphunter better.

Bat

Following Friday's Jonah Hex sketch, I realized it's been a while since I'd drawn Bat Lash, another favorite of mine.

Jonah

I'd still like very much to draw an issue of whatever book this guy's a part of someday. Since he's relatively unchanged after DC's reboot, he's one of the few characters I still recognize.
